Objective: To study new cases of breast cancer as well as to evaluate the epidemiological profile and survival rate of patients with breast cancer treated in the Erasto Gaertner Hospital, in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Methods: Collection of variables obtained from medical records and the data collection form of the Cancer Clinical Registry, with subsequent statistical analysis aided by the Epi-Info program. Results: From 1990 to 2009, 5,158 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in that institution. The most common histological type was the invasive ductal carcinoma in 81.7% of the cases. In the 1990s, patients with stage III and IV totaled 35.0%, while between 2000–2009 it was reduced to 25.8%, showing a significant decrease in more advanced stages. Among patients treated between 1990–1999, a 5-year overall survival was observed in 61.0% of the cases. Conclusion: The profile of new cases was similar to that observed in the literature, with an increase of early cases, and survival rate being compatible with what is observed in patients with breast cancer in Brazil.
