Abstract

Objective: To understand and analyze the significance of breast reconstruction in women with cancer undergoing radical mastectomy or its possibility, through information provided by them, their feelings, participation and meanings related to this practice, in order to support this treatment approach in the public health field in Brazil. Methods: A qualitative exploratory survey was carried out, using interviews with a group of 20 women about breast reconstruction. Results and discussion: A positive influence of the procedure was found on quality of life and well being, when included in the medical therapy. As a negative aspect, women did not have enough information about the possibility of surgical breast reconstruction as an important part of treatment.
