Introduction: Phyllodes tumor is a rare breast neoplasm, accounting for 2% of fibroepithelial tumors of the breast, with 80% of cases represented by benign tumors. Objective: To investigate the cases treated of phyllodes tumors at Erasto Gaertner Hospital, its management and outcome. Method: Retrospective study of patients with phyllodes tumor treated in Erasto Gaertner Hospital, from 1973 to 2008, totaling 58 cases. Results: Of the 58 cases studied, the mean age of patients was 43.93 years and the average size of tumors of 9.4 cm. Twenty-four cases (41.3%) were malignant. The locoregional recurrence rate was 15.4%, and 12% in the same breast, 1.7% in ipsilateral axilla. The rate of distant recurrence was 8.6%. Lymph node involvement was present in 1.7% of cases evaluated. The treatment consisted of simple mastectomy with or without axillary dissection in 63.7% of patients and 36.3% for lumpectomy. The 2-year survival was 97.3% and at 5 years 89.4%. Conclusion: The sample reflects what is already described in literature in most of the factors analyzed, except for the size of tumors and a higher percentage of the malignant borderline tumors found. We believe that these facts have occurred because Erasto Gaetner Hospital is considered an Oncology referral hospital in the region, receiving more complex cases.
