Epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with breast cancer in Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ), Brazil

Objective: In Brazil, statistical studies show a reduction in the incidence and mortality from breast cancer in recent years. However, there is significant negative social and economic impact of this disease. So invest in new epidemiological and pathogenetic about this disease, aiming to create new strategies, public social programs for prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer is needed. Methods: We decided as a method and case holding a cross-sectional study. The data were collected through survey data from the medical records of patients treated in the Assistance Unit of High Complexity Oncology (UNACON), in the University Hospital Álvaro Alvim, in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, in 2010. We used a survey instrument developed by the research group. Ethical issues were observed. The analysis and discussion of data occurred through the use of computer program and in light of the theoretical research referenced. Results: There was a predominance of cases among women in the age group above 50 years of age (61.4%), caucasians (46.4%) in postmenopausal women (58.5%). It was observed that over 70% of patients had not been exposed to various risk factors expressed by the literature. Conclusion: Breast cancer still represents a major public health problem in Brazil. It is necessary to expand epidemiologic knowledge on this disease. Thus, you can qualify the best policies and programs for prevention, early diagnosis and possible cure of this disease.
