Abstract

The use of Latissimus Dorsi for surgical treatment of women with breast cancer, as a way to provide mamary reconstruction was described by Iginio Tansini, in 1906. This surgery remained forgotten for many years until, in 1976, Olivari took up the work of Tansini. Despite the initial euphoria, Latissimus Dorsi techinique lost space for TRAM flap and currently its use has a small extent, since the mammary breast reconstruction protheses have been preferred in several breast surgery services around the world. However, this technique may help in some tumors cases, even the benign ones where there is difficulty in getting breast implants. The authors report a case of a 32 years old woman with a big benign breast tumor. The tumor was removed and the breast was reconstructed with Latissimus Dorsi flap.
